smartHEALTH, the European Digital Innovation Hub for Smart Health: Precision Medicine and Innovative E-health Services, participated in the Medical Informatics Europe 2025, held in Glasgow, on 19-21/05/2025 with the with the theme “Intelligent health systems – From technology to data and knowledge“.

Discussion Panel: Connecting research to entrepreneurship: the power of European Digital Innovation Hubs, 20/05/2025

Representatives of the smartHEALTH project, and more specifically:

  • Dr. Pantelis Natsiavas, Researcher (Grade C), Head of the eHealth Lab, Institute of Applied Biosciences of Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (INAB|CERTH)
  • Dimitrios G. Katehakis, Head of Center for eHealth Applications and Services at the Institute of Computer Science, Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), Director of the Hellenic Digital Health Cluster (HDHC)

participated as speakers in the discussion panel “Connecting research to entrepreneurship: the power of European Digital Innovation Hubs”, along with Adelina-Elena Ezariu, Innovation Manager of Digital Innovation Zone EDIH. You can see the program HERE.

The panel discussion focused on the experiences gained throughout the EDIHs’ operation so far. The results of the hubs’ actions and insights gained from collaboration between the research and business sectors were presented. The panel also showcased the digital maturity level of the Greek E-health ecosystem and the Romanian healthcare SMEs, highlighting actions that facilitate digital evolution and addressing challenges encountered in this process. Moreover, relevant issues were also discussed, summarized as follows:

  • The impact of the European Health Data Space regulation and the AI Act on the legal and regulatory framework, aiming to enable effective health data processing.
  • Lack of standardized interoperability between digital health systems at the European level, hindering seamless integration and data exchange across platforms and organizations.
  • Limited cross-border collaboration in digital health, hindering the exchange of best practices and diminishing the impact of innovation at the European level.
  • Insufficient collaboration between businesses and the R&D ecosystem, limiting industry competitiveness and success in incorporating essential digital tools into products and processes.
  • Tailoring digital solutions to the financial realities of small vs. mid-sized healthcare SMEs.
