HERADO Success Story: Verification & Upgrade of IT Infrastructure with the Help of smartHEALTH experts
This report presents a successful collaboration story between Hellenic Radiation Dosimetry SA (HERADO) and the European Digital Innovation “smartHEALTH”. Through this partnership, HERADO effectively addressed digital challenges to verify & upgrade its IT infrastructure to widen its competitive advantage.
Key Information
Hellenic Radiation Dosimetry SA (HERADO) combines a strong academic, scientific, and research background with a robust commercial outlook. The company started from Space, successfully participating in missions and collaborating with Space agencies. The company is the only European SME that designs, produces, and provides a complete, innovative, active, and smart radiation monitoring system. The system has various applications, in Healthcare, Space, Energy, Security, etc. The system comprises an active, wearable dosimeter that accurately measures, notifies, and helps the workers protect themselves effectively from radiation. The dosimeter is connected continuously with an IT monitoring & reporting platform, through a common and safe Wi-Fi network. A series of innovations, advantages, and certifications allow the company to be the only one globally that can use the active dosimeter alone, without the need for an accompanying passive one. The offer of the complete system is disruptive and a game-changer in radiation protection.
- Technologies Used: Cloud Services, Cybersecurity
- Collaboration Period: June-November 2023
- Services Provided: Technical Guidance, Requirement Analysis, Provision of Solutions to Improve IT Infrastructure
The Challenge
- Verify the correctness of the implementation.
- Propose points of improvement.
Today, HERADO has a large number of operational dosimeters in operation, in 18 countries. The dosimeters are IoT devices that transmit their data to a central IT platform. Authorized personnel from the owner of the facility (such as a hospital or a nuclear power plant) or even the country’s radiation protection body could access the platform and get the data needed for their reports or indicating dangerous incidents. The platform was developed in-house, with no prior knowledge of the requirements of the sector. The first challenge for the company was to verify if the approach was correct and if there were gaps or mistakes concerning a series of characteristics such as safety, privacy, and interoperability. Then, the company is growing steadily with many more users, from new markets. A second challenge was to check how to expand the platform to serve a much larger number of users and possibly with another IT architecture. These challenges require the specific expertise of Health software engineers which is not easy to find in the market.
The Analysis
- Assessment of Digital Maturity.
- Presentation of the methodology to be followed for the analysis of the characteristics.
- Selection of 3 analysis categories.
Following a thorough analysis of HERADO’s requirements and the implementation of the Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA) process, we conducted a systematic evaluation of the current situation. A team of specialized software engineers, with expertise in developing IT solutions for the Health sector came to help. Through a methodology developed partially from PCP (Pre-Commercial Procurement) projects, the experts assessed the IT platform of the company
The Solutions
- Providing a reference for what each system should have, in each category under examination.
- Providing suggestions for specific future actions.
The company received a detailed and structured report that contains 3 dimensions: Safety/Privacy, Compatibility/Interoperability and Expandability/Portability/Performance. For each dimension, there are two components. First, the requirements of the specific dimension (a short background information). Second, the specific results from the assessment and proposals for developing further the platform.
The Implementation
- Positive evaluation of the current platform.
- For future use, proposing the development of a new platform with a different architecture, through specific proposals.
The evaluation of the platform is positive. Today, the platform serves perfectly the needs of the users, without any alarming issues. In the case of significant changes, such as the addition of a large number of users, the addition of additional services, and a radical change of User Interface then the company would have to move to another platform. The company received specific guidance on how to introduce a new platform.
